NATAMYCIN

Good Thursday all.

Today I want to talk about the food additive NATAMYCIN.  It is an anti-fungal that has several uses.  It can be used as an eye infection treatment by your physician and as a mold inhibitor in your pre-processed food. Wow, that’s a mighty diverse product.

Natamycin is produced from a soil bacteria named STREPTOMYCES. It was discovered in 1955 so it’s been around almost as long as I have.  It is considered a natural additive because it is derived from something found in nature.  The FDA says it is safe and it will not make you anti-biotic resistant because you do not ingest enough on a daily basis to make you so.

It is used to extend the shelf life of products such as pre-shredded cheese.  It helps the cheese to last longer than two weeks, which is the typical amount of time freshly grated cheese stays fresh, to about 38 days.  It can be found on the list of ingredients for any product that is subject to mold like bread, wine, salad dressings, etc.  Many food-producing companies are beginning to use natamycin instead of the previously used sorbic acid. Sorbic acid is a “natural” preservative that is derived from berries. That’s a discussion for another day. 🙂

Whole Foods (a chain of grocery stores) has put natamycin on its’ list of “Unacceptable Ingredients for Food.”  The country of Lebanon has outlawed the use of natamycin in food products.  I also found an article about Russia denying McDonalds’ using certain cheeses because of natamycin being an ingredient.

As usual, my discussion is always subject to your personal decision. There is a school of thought that says anything that is OK’d by the FDA is perfectly OK to eat.  I have been on that team all of my life until now.  I’ve educated myself enough to know that I am not as healthy as I should be and my body is suffering from inflammation.  And rather than having to depend on prescriptions for more and more pain meds, I would rather do something about the food I choose to eat.  I feel the least processed and the closer to whole food I can get, the better off I will be.  You do some research on your own and come to your own conclusions. As for me, I am going to steer clear of natamycin.

This afternoon I am going to Amy’s to work on our Friend Friday segment.  We are cooking a meal and  inviting a couple of friends to join in the dinner party. We will be recording the whole thing so keep an eye out for tomorrows postings.
